Motorised Vehicles

This Session is great for exploring design, strong structures and improving design. The Children work in groups of 3. I set them a design brief. The vehicles must be designed for speed and it must carry a drinking bottle. We explore gears and test which gear ratio will give us maximum speed. We test our designs and measure the time it takes to cover 10m. We then calculate how long it will take to cover 100m and 1km. We work out the average speed. We then change the gearing and test our vehicles up a steep hill and calculate the gradient of the hill.
